Signal-Based GTM: prioritising accounts with reasons to buy
Signal-based GTM means moving beyond static target lists and prioritising accounts using fit, timing, growth signals and the context already sitting in your CRM.
What it means
I use signal-based GTM to answer a practical question: which accounts deserve attention now? Firmographic fit is only one input. The useful layer is combining ICP criteria with observable growth events, account context, engagement and commercial relevance so sales and marketing can focus effort where there is a stronger reason to act.
The problem it addresses
Traditional account lists go stale quickly. A company can fit the ICP perfectly and still have no urgency. Conversely, an account may show a hiring change, expansion signal or other growth event that makes the timing more interesting. Signal-based GTM adds that timing layer without treating every signal as buying intent.
How I approach it
At Think & Grow, I designed signal-based outbound programs in Clay using ICP scoring, tiered account lists, fit gates and AI-generated pain hypotheses, then executed them through HubSpot sales sequences. I also restructured ABM around roughly 620 HubSpot target accounts as a single source of truth, tiered and segmented by vertical.
A practical workflow
- 01
Define fit. Agree the ICP and the conditions that make an account worth pursuing.
- 02
Collect signals. Bring in growth events, account changes and relevant external information.
- 03
Add CRM context. Check history, ownership, prior conversations and current status before acting.
- 04
Score and tier. Use explicit gates so a signal does not automatically become a sales task.
- 05
Route the next action. Move qualified accounts into the appropriate sequence, brief or owner workflow.

Evidence from my work
Built a target account intelligence agent using Clay, Apify and Claude that monitors 146 sales target accounts for growth signals and posts weekly briefs to Slack. I also restructured ABM around roughly 620 HubSpot target accounts.
A growth signal is not automatically purchase intent. I do not claim that monitoring an account improves conversion unless there is measured evidence connecting the workflow to that outcome.
